KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — Kensington police officers counted 24 assistance calls in May, up from just eight the month before.
The report, presented at the recent committee of council meeting, noted 19 of the assistance calls were COVID-19 related.
Kensington Police Services has been staffing the checkpoint at the Confederation Bridge three days a week.
The responsibility is shared wth the Summerside Police Services and the RCMP, said Kensington Chief Lewis Sutherland.
“When people are not allowed on the Island, we assist (departments of) health and safety to get those people back off the Island,” said Sutherland, adding the province wanted a police presence at the checkpoint.
Some the the COVID-19-related assistance calls are generated at the bridge, said Sutherland.
Others are a combination of calls to check-in on people in self-isolation and calls from residents with COVID-19 concerns.
