BRAE, P.E.I. — Farmers make up only 1.5 per cent of the population, Justin Rogers says, but they help feed the other 98.5 per cent.
“Farmers, even though they’re such a small part of the population, they’re still the backbone of this country,” said Rogers.
He and his wife, Laura, and their children, Luke and Mary, live on Picturesque Farms in Brae where they grow seed grains and livestock.
The couple was recently named Atlantic Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers, but it is an award they are happy to share with family, neighbours and their community.
“I don’t forget that first year I was growing potatoes and I didn’t own a set of harrows. They were provided to me by a neighbour,” said Rogers. "I don’t forget our neighbours who helped us dig that first year.”
He said he values the friendships he’s made with customers and fellow farmers. Among the buildings on his farm is a potato warehouse that was built by his grandfather and uncle. They subsequently sold it to West Devon grower John MacLean.
“When I started farming on my own, John approached me and said if I’m growing potatoes, I should have my family warehouse back.”
A lease-to-own arrangement was agreed upon.
“I would not have acquired it any other way.”
The Rogers also acknowledge family and employees who help them with their farm operation, including Jeffery Stewart who has been with them for 16 years.
