CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. —
Black migration is the theme of this year’s Black Cultural Society of P.E.I.’s Black History Month.
The theme emphasizes the movement of people of African descent to new destinations and subsequently to new social realities.
The Black Cultural Society of P.E.I. would like to use this theme to look specifically at the experience of the black community on P.E.I.
The Confederation Centre’s public library activities include Galimoto Maker Space for Teens, bend and wrap wire to create a metal toy, ages 13-18, on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. It also includes the Kente Cloth Craft, Cut and weave paper to create your own version of a traditional Ghanian fabric for ages 5-12.
Songs of Black History with Scott Parsons and Friends will take place on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m.
And on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m., the library will host A Loud Place, a night of music and spoken word.
There will also be events at the Fox and Crow at UPEI on Tuesday, Feb. 12, and in the Confederation Centre of the Arts gallery on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 7 p.m.
Parsons’ new album, “Darkie’s Hollow’’, will be launched on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Haviland Club. It features 10 new tracks inspired by black Island history. The title of the album comes from a conversation with black Island descendant Stella Shepard, whose family lived on a road, referred to by locals, as Darkie’s Hollow. Guests include Deborah Misener, Shepard, Linda Wigmore and Ryan Gallant.
A night of food and music will take place on Thursday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m., at Upstreet Brewery featuring a kitchen takeover by Tolu Adesoye of Ores Bukateria. Musical performances will be by Simone Bell, Vince the Messenger, LxVNDR and Studio 115.
