SUMMERSIDE – The first candidate for Ward 5: Hillcrest – Platte River has come forward.

On Wednesday, Barbara Gallant, a longtime resident of the ward, put her name forward to challenge current Ward 5 councillor Greg Campbell for a seat at Summerside City Council.

“As a graduate of Atlantic Business College and possessing good organizational and excellent people skills, I can work independently, or as part of a team, to achieve success.

“I consider myself to be a quick learner, willing to take on any challenge and I have demonstrated these attributes through my work experience and voluntary services.”

Since 1997, Gallant has owned and operated her business, Barb’s Esthetics. She’s also worked for N.B. Power, Silhouette Two Summerside, and the Loyalist Country Inn for 10 years.

She has also volunteered with the George R. Pearke’s Brach of the Royal of Canadian Legion, the Lest We Forget Committee and the Ladies Auxiliary. She has acted as chairman of the Mother’s Day banquet for Family Violence, the Celebrity Dinner and lobster suppers and vice president of the P.E.I. Command.

“Becoming a member of city council would afford me another avenue to serve my community. I find it quite interesting and I am encouraged by the number of women who are seeking elected office.”

Arsenault would like to see all eligible voters participate in the upcoming election.

“There are many challenges facing our community as we go forward.”

Gallant says she’s reviewed the nominations and platforms and can offer her support on issues raised so far, providing there is the revenue to finance their implementation.

“My top priority is the realignment of Pope Road and Central Street, to eliminate what I view as an accident waiting to happen. If I am elected to council I will aggressively pursue a solution to the hazardous situation.

“I feel quite strongly that our city must do our part to ensure that GST employees, Summerside citizens and the regular travelling public no longer have to deal with this serious bottleneck.”
