CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A Springvale man who told police his house burned down the day before they caught him driving while he wasn’t supposed to was sentenced recently to 30 days in jail.
Steven Joseph Flynn, 40, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to driving while prohibited.
The court heard that on March 2, a police officer on patrol saw a vehicle with an invalid registration sticker.
A check confirmed Flynn was under a three-year driving prohibition.
Flynn told the police his house had burned down the day before and he was on his way to see a friend.
The court heard he had prior convictions for drunk driving, driving while disqualified, dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
Before hearing his sentence, Flynn addressed the court and said there was no excuse for what he did.
Orr told Flynn he got in his vehicle and drove two years after getting a three-year driving prohibition.
“It says a whole lot about the whole situation sir,” she said.
Orr also said Flynn’s record included driving with no insurance, driving while his licence was suspended and driving with no registration.
With the jail time, Orr issued a two-year driving ban.
