ALBERTON, P.E.I. — Alberton Town Council has decided on a flag policy.
The three flag poles on the town hall property will fly only the Canadian, Prince Edward Island and Town of Alberton flags.
That is in keeping with a stand taken by council last May, when it refused to fly a Pride flag from one of the flag poles, a decision that was met with considerable controversy.
The new flag policy was adopted, Mayor David Gordon explained, “to deter what happened last spring, somewhat”.
The new policy, however, allows council to decide on specific requests to fly special flags from a pole the town wants to erect beside the gazebo at the Alberton Town Pond. A Pride flag was flown from a makeshift flagpole at that location last July.
Gordon said council will be checking with the town’s maintenance worker about erecting a proper flagpole at that location this spring.
“We’d like to have a proper flagpole there,” the mayor said.
The new flag policy will require requests for use of the flagpole by the town to be presented to council for consideration.
