SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Summerside is looking to up its crosswalk game.

Several city councillors have expressed frustration with a perceived lack of respect for crosswalks in the community by motorists, so they are looking for ways to make them stand out more.

Some ideas that have been shared include painting 3-D crosswalks, colouring them, adding flags and even installing cutouts of police officers.

There was some discussion during council’s recent committee meetings as to how impactful these changes would be.

In the end, council decided to try adding small flags to two of the crosswalks along Water Street, near Green’s Shore. The flags can be picked up by pedestrians crossing the street from a bucket on one side of the roadway and deposited in another on the other side.

City staff indicated that it may take some time before they have time to work on this project as they are still dealing with the cleanup from hurricane Dorian.
