The Town of Kensington has agreed to work with a local resident who wants to establish a community garden for residents.

Jamie MacKay recently contacted the town asking for space on public land that would be appropriate for a garden.

A briefing note circulated at the town’s recent monthly meeting states that MacKay’s intention is to establish a main garden which can be accessed by residents in need with smaller plots available to seniors and families in the community who would like to plant a garden and do not have the space to do so.

MacKay has also indicated that he has volunteers prepared to help care for the space and is awaiting the town’s OK on land before applying to the province for start-up funding.

Council had originally considered offering MacKay use of an open plot near the Community Gardens Complex, however, some councillors pointed out that the area is used as overflow parking by people using the community ball fields. There was some concern that the mixture of the two would not go over well.

Councillors suggested that a property near the community pool, known as the Glover Property, might make a better location.

Town was asked to discuss the two options with MacKay and were authorized to offer him the use of whichever they together deemed more appropriate.
