CORNER BROOK, N.L. — A 14-year-old youth has been charged with assault as result of an investigation into a fight involving a group of girls from Corner Brook Intermediate in September.
The fight occurred in a parking garage at the Valley Mall on Sept. 14. A video of the incident was later circulated showing two girls exchanging words. They’re surrounded by other students, many with their cellphones out recording what’s happening.
The verbal altercation turns physical with some pushing between one of the girls and a bystander. Soon more people get involved and the girl ends up on the floor with others swarming her, punching and kicking her. One of the attackers is seen stomping on her head.
The Corner Brook RNC became aware of the incident the next day and an investigation was carried out by the criminal investigation unit.
On Thursday, RNC media relations officer Const. Mike Hoddinott responded to an email inquiry to say the file had been concluded and the assault charge laid.
When asked about the investigation, Hoddinott did not respond with specific details.
“All pieces of evidence are considered when reaching a conclusion in an investigation, and video surveillance can certainly play an important role in reaching a resolution,” he said in the email.
As for the identity of the youth, Hoddinott could only confirm the person is 14.
The accused will appear in court at a later date.
In response to the fight, the RNC increased patrols of the area during peak times, and the Valley Mall put extra security in place during lunch hours both inside and outside the mall.
