Two people were injured and had to be cut out of their car following a moose-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada highway Thursday night.

The two were trapped in the vehicle when it overturned in the median after striking a moose in the eastbound lane of the T.C.H. about a kilometre east of Butter Pot Park.

The man and woman were then trapped in the extensively damaged car until the Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene with extrication tools. Those firefighters, along with firefighters from the St. John’s Regional department who were also on scene, worked together to free the two injured so they could be transported to hospital.

Their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening and both were conscious and talking to first responders.

Eastbound traffic was held up in the area until firefighters left the scene.

The moose died on impact.
