The RCMP in New-Wes-Valley on the province’s northeast coast say two people have been charged in relation to a single-vehicle rollover that occurred at Indian Bay in late May, a crash that left two other people with serious injuries.

The police say they were notified at 4 a.m. on May 25 about the accident and on arriving at the scene, found one passenger who had been ejected from the car and another who was trapped inside the vehicle.

The RCMP says the driver of the car, 41-year-old Kelly Pickett of Centreville, had left the scene after contacting 62-year-old Gerard Shaw of Indian Bay to pick her up prior to the arrival of the police and other emergency responders.

The two injured passengers were transported for medical attention.

The police say a lengthy investigation concluded the crash scene was staged by Pickett and Shaw to portray one of the passengers as being the driver. The police also say Pickett and Shaw then departed the scene, leaving the injured passengers behind, and headed to a remote area. The RCMP claim it was only after Pickett — who was also seriously injured during the rollover — was secured in a residence, that Shaw reported the collision to police.

Last week, Pickett was arrested and charged with the Criminal Code offences of dangerous operation causing bodily harm and public mischief, and three more offences under the Highway Traffic Act ( speeding 51 kilometres and over, failing to stop at an accident scene and failing to render assistance to an injured person).

Later in the week, Shaw was arrested and charged with public mischief and failing to render assistance to an injured person.

The two were released from custody and are scheduled to make court appearances at later dates.
