ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — An arrest warrant has been issued for a Conception Bay South man who didn’t show up to his sentencing hearing at provincial court in St. John’s Tuesday.

It’s the second time in as many months that an arrest warrant has been issued for James (Jamie) Purcell, 40.

Purcell was convicted in December after a trial on charges dating back to August 2018, when he assaulted two RNC officers, gave them a fake name and birthday, caused a disturbance and breached a probation order. While he was awaiting his sentencing date on those charges, police issued a warrant for Purcell’s arrest on a new set of offences.

He is alleged to have stolen from the Mount Pearl Walmart and breached court orders four times by failing to abide by a curfew, among other offences.

Police located Purcell and took him into custody, and he was released on a $260 cash deposit and new conditions a few days later.

Purcell is now likely facing new charges related to his failure to attend his sentencing this week.

Purcell and his girlfriend were arrested last summer and charged with a home invasion involving a gun on Bay Bulls Road in Kilbride. Those charges were dropped after the complainants didn’t come to court to testify.

Purcell spent time in prison in Ontario after he was convicted in 2011 of manslaughter for the death of a three-year-old boy two years earlier. The child died from brain damage inflicted on him by Purcell, who had initially been charged with second-degree murder. He later pleaded guilty to the lesser manslaughter charge.
