SYDNEY, N.S. — RCMP have issued a public warning concerning a telephone scam making the rounds across Cape Breton.

The federal force said in a news release Friday that the phone calls involve someone calling from 1-800 numbers, local numbers and even the RCMP toll-free number (1-800-803-7267).

The caller reports that there are issues with the individual's social insurance number (SIN). The caller tells the individual they will be arrested if their personal information is not provided. The caller of these scams claims to be calling from a specific federal agency and requests the individual's name, date of birth and SIN.

Police are advising anyone who receives such a call asking for their SIN or any personal or financial information, to request a name and a callback number and verify the institution requesting the information.

Anyone suspecting they have been the target for such a scam is asked to contact their local police along with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
