The city will begin installing new pay stations on sections of Water Street and Duckworth Street in downtown St. John's.

The new pay stations will have multiple payment options including most credit cards, debit cards and mobile payment. Due to the high incidence of vandalism the city has experienced on parking meters in the past, the new pay stations will not accept cash, the city said in a news release.

“I am pleased to announce that the first lot of pay stations have arrived and the installation will begin immediately in the downtown core,” said Coun. Debbie Hanlon.

“This is welcome news especially for the businesses that require a steady turn over in parking spaces for their customers.”

A total of 24 pay stations will be installed on Water Street between Queen Street and Ayre’s Cove, and on Duckworth Street between Prescott Street and Cochrane Street, servicing about 90 parking spaces. After the installation, paid parking will be enforced in these areas starting Nov. 16.

“As the new stations are installed, we are also expanding the PaybyPhone app option to the same areas,” Hanlon said. “Motorists are encouraged to look for signage when parking and consider downloading the PaybyPhone app, as this service will continue to expand in the future.”

Timed parking areas will be maintained on streets that are not yet serviced by the pay stations or PaybyPhone.
