A man chained himself to a tree outside a Mississauga long-term care home where his mother lives to demand better living conditions.

Innis Ingram chained himself to the tree on Wednesday afternoon outside of Camilla Care Community at Hurontario St. and The Queensway and says he will be on a hunger strike to force improvements.

It is one of the five homes where operations are being taken over by province after a Canadian Armed Forces report stated appalling conditions.

“The chain is symbolic. It’s a level of discomfort so I appreciate the plight of the residents,” Ingram said in a television interview.

The army was recently called into the homes to help with a shortage of staff and reported that LTC residents were living in cockroach infestations, and residents were not properly cleaned, fed or attended to.

Ingram says he will stay chained to the tree until inspectors arrive at the home and make improvements for his 76-year-old mother and the other residents.

There have been 200 COVID-19 cases at the home and 48 deaths.

Ingram says his mother is currently COVID-19-negative.

He has placed crosses on the lawn for each resident that has died.

“My mom has been a rock for my sister and me our whole life … whatever I can do for her won’t be enough,” he said.
