CORNER BROOK, N.L. — Grenfell students will soon be able to capture their volunteer and community work in a co-curricular record.

A co-curricular record is an official university record of students' activities and complements their academic transcript.

It allows students to track their skills and learning experiences outside of the classroom. Such experiences provide students with transferable skills while engaging with communities at Grenfell, in Corner Brook, in western Newfoundland and around the world, according to a press release from the university.

Grenfell’s co-curricular record program will provide a list of co-curricular opportunities to help students plan their co-curricular engagement throughout their studies.

Students will be able to learn about these opportunities during a virtual launch of the program Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Connection details can be found here.

"The experiences our students will receive by participating in our co-curricular record program are just as important as those they gain through traditional learning,” said Jeff Keshen, Grenfell’s vice-president.

“The experiential learning aspects of this program will ensure we graduate students who are creative thinkers and resilient problem solvers; who understand the importance of social and civic responsibility; who respect diversity and who are team players, exhibiting qualities of leadership and innovation.”

To qualify for the co-curricular record, an activity must address one of more of the following

  • increase public engagement
  • produce positive social change
  • showcase leadership

“There’s a myriad of activities that meet the co-curricular criteria,” said Jennifer Buxton, regional engagement and experiential learning co-ordinator.

Examples include campus and community engagement; experiential learning opportunities such as international exchanges; personal and professional development such as workshops or conferences; and student-led initiatives through campus clubs and societies.
