Another FOX reboot is coming to Vancouver.
Riding high on the success of the X-Files revival — and no doubt hoping to piggyback off the success of The CW’s Riverdale, which also films in the area — the TV network has announced plans to bring back the classic teen drama, Beverly Hills, 90210.
Original stars Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling are all set to return to the titular postal code, at least in theory.
In reality, the reboot, simply titled 90120, is scheduled to shoot in North Vancouver from May 21 to July 31.
Admittedly, it’s not the tony Los Angeles community identified in the title, but it has hills, and it’s among the toniest of the Vancouvers. Plus, the location scouts will have no trouble finding an empty mansion.
It’s a big move away from the original series, which was produced in the Los Angeles neighbourhood of Van Nuys, but it’s hardly the biggest move away from the original series: The so-called reboot will have more of a mockumentary format, according to FOX.
Per the news release: “90210 comes with a big twist: Priestley, Garth, Ziering, Carteris, Green and Spelling will play heightened versions of themselves in a brand-new serialized drama – with a healthy dose of irreverence – that is inspired by their real lives and relationships.”
The reboot will unfortunately be missing Luke Perry, who became a ’90s teen idol for his role as the brooding Dylan McKay on the original show. Perry, who also starred on Riverdale, died of a stroke in March . He was not signed on to the reboot, but his former co-stars told Variety that the show intends to find a way to honour him.
The plot of 90210, as conceived by Garth, Spelling, and executive-producers Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler, follows the original six cast members as they attempt to get a proper Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot off the ground.
Suffice it to say, drama (and a little comedy, as it turns out) ensues.
“What will happen,” FOX asks, “when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow up together – attempts to continue from where they left off?”
We’ll find out when 90210 airs later this summer. In the meantime, keep an eye out for Priestley, Ziering and the rest at the Lonsdale Quay Market.
