SYDNEY, N.S. — Several people in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality have been issued fines under the Health Protection Act and the Emergency Management Act as part of the COVID-19 restrictions.
A North Sydney man in his 40s, who police say was awaiting COVID-19 test results, has been fined $1,000 for failing to self-isolate.
Cape Breton Regional Police spokesperson Desiree Magnus said the Health Protection Act requires individuals to self-isolate while awaiting the test results.
“He was seen outside of his home when he was supposed to be self-isolating,” and was reported to police last week.
Magnus said four more charges were laid on Monday.
A Sydney man in his 50s was issued a $1,000 fine for failing to maintain social distancing.
“That was an individual with more than one person in the vehicle with him (who were) not from the same household.”
Three people parked in vehicles at Dominion Beach — two from Glace Bay and one from New Waterford — were each fined $582.50 for parking at a closed park. All provincial parks and beaches in the province are closed due to the COVID-19 crisis.
The regional police have issued a total of eight fines since last week, four $1,000 fines for failing to comply with the Health Protection Act, three for not social distancing and one for not self-isolating as required.
Police strongly advise the public to educate themselves on the directives and enforcement measures in the order issued by Nova Scotia’s chief medical officer Dr. Robert Strang at www.novascotia.ca/coronavirus.
Magnus said as of April 6 police have received nearly 300 COVID-19 related calls that include inquiries under the acts as well as complaints regarding people who are not following the COVID-19 regulations.
