South Asian students at the school say they have experienced some racism since coming to Cape Breton from India, but those negatives experiences are generally outweighed by positive ones from friendly Cape Bretoners willing to help them in any way.

SYDNEY, N.S. — International students at Cape Breton University will be hosting an Around the World reception highlighting the various cultures represented in their hospitality management class.

The event will bring together Canadian, Chinese, French, Indian, Korean and Vietnamese cultures.

“The students wanted to find a way to incorporate aspects of their own cultures and the culture they’ve come to know and love in Cape Breton,” said Jennifer Currie, instructor in the tourism and hospitality management degree program.

“The event, which is a requirement of the degree, allows CBU to showcase the level of inclusivity and acceptance of the traditions of its students, as well as provide them with hands-on, experiential learning opportunities.”

Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative is sponsoring the event that also includes musical entertainment by island artists Colin Grant and Mike LeLievre. As well, international students will perform songs representing their nations.

The event is set for March 3 and tickets are $30 per person. The party will be held in CBU’s Multipurpose room at 7 p.m. Each ticket ensures a guest one free special alcoholic drink and free food.

Those attending must be 19 years or over. For more information or to secure a ticket, contact Jennifer Currie at [email protected] or 902-563-1336.
