SYDNEY, N.S. — Cape Breton Regional Police are investigating an incident involving a racial slur and erratic driving at the Mayflower Mall.
The incident, which was captured on video and shared on social media, took place on Monday.
Three male youth, including one who is Indigenous and one who is Black, are seen in the video in the front parking lot appearing to yell to people in a vehicle who seemed to be yelling back.
The vehicle then took off, accelerating quickly, as a male in the passenger seat yelled the n-word at the youth.
Then the driver did a U-turn and drove toward the young men, who jumped in between cars as if attempting to avoid being hit.
“It's under investigation... The comments that were made, the driving, the whole incident is being investigated,” confirmed Staff Sgt. Bill Turner during a phone interview Tuesday.
Video of the altercation has been shared thousands of times on social media, including more than 10,600 times on Twitter. On Facebook, it’s also been shared by family of the youth, friends and concerned citizens.
The alleged driver of the vehicle has also shared on Facebook his version of events and what instigated the incident.
