SYDNEY, N.S. — A Capstick man has been remanded for the weekend after being charged with multiple offences including firearms, impaired driving and uttering threats.
Waylon Joseph McLellan, 37, is now scheduled to appear in provincial court in Port Hawkesbury on Monday for a bail hearing.
Ingonish RCMP reported that McLellan was arrested after an incident in St. Margaret’s Village.
At approximately 7:06 p.m. on Oct. 21, RCMP responded to a disturbance at a residence involving a firearm. Prior to police arriving, the male suspect had fled in a vehicle and was believed to be in possession of a firearm.
Police did locate the vehicle and the suspect then rammed a police vehicle with his vehicle and then fled into nearby woods. Police received information that the man was at a nearby residence and the area was contained with assistance from RCMP members from Cheticamp detachment.
Police were able to make telephone contact with the man and a short time later he was arrested in a vehicle, as a passenger, leaving the residence.
Police located the firearm the following day with the assistance of RCMP police dog services.
McLellan is now charged with a host of offences including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, careless use of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon knowing he was not authorized, three counts of uttering threats, four counts of breaching court orders, assaulting a police officer and impaired driving.
There were no injuries as a result of the incident and the investigation is ongoing.
Additional charges filed relating to child pornography
A Sydney man recently arrested on a warrant in Halifax is now facing additional charges relating to child pornography.
Andrew Alfred Giasson, 31, of Howie Centre was arrested in Halifax in September after Cape Breton Regional Police secured an arrest warrant.
He was initially charged with possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography and distributing child pornography.
He was later released on conditions that included he not possess any weapons, he report, in person, once a week to regional police, he is not to possess any cellphone or pager that can provide access to the Internet; he is not to possess any device capable of recording or taking photos, he is not to volunteer with any group that would put him in a position of trust, he is also to stay away from areas where children under 16 are likely to gather (parks, playgrounds, daycares).
Police have now filed additional charges against Giasson.
He is charged with three counts of transmitting sexually explicit material to an individual under the age of 18 for the purpose of sex. Three counts of using telecommunications to communicate with a person under the age of 18 for the purpose of sex. Three counts distributing child pornography and single counts of possession of child pornography and accessing child pornography.
The offences are alleged to have occurred between February and June in Howie Centre.
Giasson is now expected to enter pleas to the charges Nov. 23.
Accused remanded pending bail hearing
A New Waterford man has been remanded pending the outcome of a bail hearing set for November.
Devan Christopher Miller, 30, of Catherine Street, is charged with nine counts of breaching court orders, two counts of assault and single counts of assault causing bodily harm, assault by choking, mischief and uttering a threat.
Miller had been previously released on conditions but was charged with two counts of breaching that order and was remanded.
He is now scheduled back in provincial court Nov. 19 for a bail hearing.
Accused facing yet another driving charge
A North Sydney man who was banned in July from driving for 10 years is back behind bars after being arrested for driving while disqualified.
Justin Ryan Beddow, 40, of Pierce Street is alleged to have committed the offence Oct. 4 in North Sydney.
In July, he was sentenced to complete a four-month conditional sentence to be followed by 12 month-probation period and banned from driving for 10 years after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified.
A conditional sentence allows offenders to serve their time in the community under strict conditions rather than going to jail.
Beddow has admitted to breaching his conditional sentence and is now serving the remaining 50 days in jail.
He is scheduled to appear in provincial court Tuesday for a bail hearing on the new charge of driving while disqualified. If granted bail, he would have to wait until he completes serving the remainder of his conditional sentence before being released.
Beddow’s past criminal record includes three convictions for impaired driving and another three for driving while disqualified.
Accused facing new charge of conspiracy
A Sydney man facing a new charge of conspiracy to traffic in drugs is now scheduled to have a bail hearing Monday.
Francis Todd Axworthy, 45, is charged with nine counts of breaching court orders, and single counts of mischief relating to property damage (a window), possession for the purpose of trafficking involving cocaine, possession of crack cocaine and resisting arrest.
Axworthy was previously the subject of an arrest warrant having failed to attend court.
He continues to be on remand pending the outcome of his bail hearing.
