SYDNEY, N.S. — An Eskasoni man facing multiple offences including second-degree murder is to return to provincial court Dec. 14 to enter pleas.
McKenzie Daniel Poulette, 24, is also charged with two counts of breaching court orders, two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and single counts of impaired driving, dangerous driving, impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death.
The offences are alleged to have occurred Nov. 26 in Eskasoni.
Poulette is in hospital in Halifax and appeared in provincial court Monday in Sydney via telephone.
Eskasoni RCMP reported receiving a call concerning an impaired driver and while responding, received another call concerning a single-vehicle accident involving a vehicle matching the description associated with the impaired driver.
The male driver as well as a male and a female passenger all suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital. The body of the 24-year-old female victim was found at the rear of the vehicle.

Plea date set on sex offences

A Sydney man is to return to provincial court in January to enter pleas on five counts of sexual assault.
David Leonard MacDonald, 24, of Lorne Street is alleged to have committed the offences between January 2018 and May 2019 in Sydney.
MacDonald, who continues his release on conditions, is now scheduled to enter pleas to the charges Jan. 4.

Warrant issued after accused fails to attend court  

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Sydney man who failed to attend court to enter pleas on a host of offences.
James William Joseph Hogan, 52, is charged with nine counts of breaching court orders, two counts of fraud, two counts of attempted fraud, and single counts of impaired driving, refusing a breathalyzer demand, evading police, dangerous driving, resisting arrest, uttering a threat, mischief relating to property damage, theft, and unauthorized use of a computer.
The offences are alleged to have occurred in Sydney between October 2019 and February of this year.
The warrant is listed as unendorsed meaning Hogan can only be released by a judge.

Warrant issued in assault case

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Sydney Mines man charged in connection with an assault on an infant.
William Donald Kass Miller, 19, of MacInnis Street, is charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and aggravated assault.
The offences are alleged to have occurred between January and February in Sydney. The complainant was under the age of one at the time of the offences.
Miller failed to attend provincial court Monday in Sydney and as a result, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
The warrant was issued as endorsed meaning Miller can be released by police as opposed to appearing before a judge.

Plea scheduled on weapon charges 

A plea date has been assigned to a Ben Eoin couple facing weapon offences.
James Robert Osmond Berthiaume, 53, and Jennifer Lynn Chisholm, 50, are jointly charged with four counts of careless storage of weapons and single counts of possession of a firearm with no licence (a 30-30 rifle), possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace and possession of a weapon knowing such possession was prohibited.
The offences are alleged to have occurred Oct. 16 in Ben Eoin.
Both accused are now scheduled to enter pleas Jan. 4.

Plea date scheduled on multiple offences 

A Cape Breton man has been released on conditions after being charged with multiple assault offences.
Rocky Daniel Buchanan, 41, of Bay St. Lawrence, is charged with five counts of uttering threats, four counts of breaching court orders and a single count of assault. The offences are alleged to have occurred between November 2019 and August. The offences are to have occurred in Boularderie, Ingonish and Sydney Mines.
He is also charged with seven counts of assault, five counts of uttering threats, two counts of assault by choking, and single counts of assault causing bodily harm and forcible confinement.
The offences are alleged to have occurred Aug. 9 in Sydney Mines.
At the time of the alleged offences, Buchanan was living in Sydney Mines having been released on conditions which included he stay out of Victoria County.
Among the conditions set for his latest release, Buchanan is to live in Prince Edward Island and only be in Cape Breton for court and legal appointments.
He is to have no contact with six people and refrain from alcohol and drugs not prescribed to him.
He is now scheduled to enter pleas Feb. 24.
