ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Andrew Furey has been elected as the new leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Party, meaning he is line to replace the outgoing premier and Liberal leader, Dwight Ball, and become the province's 14th premier once sworn in by Lieutenant Governor Judy Foote.
Furey, who is an orthopedic surgeon, defeated John Abbott, the only other contestant for the leadership, by almost a 2-1 margin.
Nearly 22,000 votes were cast in the leadership election, which was determined by a points system .Furey won by about a 2-to-1 ratio, with 26,443 points to 13,557 for Abbott.
However, Furey — who has never held elected public office — will certainly have to win a seat to sit in the House of Assembly at some future point.
Speaking to reporters after his election as leader, Furey said he will contest "the first seat available."
