STEWIACKE, N.S. — The RCMP is thanking Nova Scotians who called to report an erratic driver and then gave statements to police after the alleged impaired driver was stopped.

According to a police news release, Colchester District RCMP responded to the erratic driver call at 10:15 a.m. on Highway 102 near Stewiacke.

Officers spotted a black SUV swerving and nearly side-swiping two other vehicles on the highway. They activated their lights and sirens but the vehicle didn't stop. It then struck a guardrail, overturned and ended up in the ditch. No other vehicles were struck at the time.

RCMP arrested the 31-year-old driver, a woman from Alberta, who was showing signs of impairment.

The woman, who was the only person in the SUV, was taken to hospital by EHS where a blood sample was taken. She did not sustain any significant injuries and was later released from custody.

She is scheduled to appear in Truro provincial court at a later date.

“Nova Scotia RCMP wants to thank the several people who called to report this driver,” the release said. “We would also like to thank the several witnesses who stopped at the scene and provided their names to police, so they could give statements to support the charges in court. The RCMP asks everyone on the road to drive responsibly, and if others are not driving safely, we ask you to report it to us as soon as you can.”

The investigation is ongoing.
