Bitter cold leads to cancellation of Charlottetown outdoor New Year's Eve celebrations

There’s plenty for Stephenville residents to take into consideration when they’re thinking about setting off fireworks in their backyards.

The City of Charlottetown’s New Year’s Eve celebrations have been put on ice.

Charlottetown’s Capital New Year has been cancelled due to freezing temperatures forecasted to continue through Dec. 31.

The outdoor event was to be held in Victoria Park, which would have little to no shelter for the public to warm up, the municipality notes in a statement.

With the low temperatures and wind chill, the event organizers felt the risk of frostbite was too high to host an event intended for families.

Poll: Should the city have cancelled its New Year's Eve celebrations?

The free community event was to include horse and wagon rides, a laser dance party and fireworks.

There was also a planned outdoor screening, coincidentally enough, of the Disney movie Frozen.
