Island high school students have a chance to win $1,000 for themselves and $1,000 for their school by making a two-minute video on workplace safety.
The Workers Compensation Board (WCB) launched its annual high school video contest on Thursday, with this year’s theme “Focus on Safety.”
The video contest is part of a nationwide initiative of the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. The P.E.I. winning entry will be automatically entered in the national contest in April.
Last year, provincial winners Ben MacMillan and Jacob MacDonald from Morell Regional High School won second place in the national contest, with a total prize of $2,500.
The WCB also encourages graduating high school students to consider applying for the Safety Matters Award. The $500 award is awarded annually to a student who has demonstrated an understanding of occupational health and safety principles and has taken the initiative to apply in school or at their workplace.
“These students are our future workers and employers and by teaching them about workplace safety habits at a young age, before they enter the workplace, we can start them on the right path,” said WCB chairman, Stuart Affleck.
"This contest allows students an opportunity to be the teacher and to become ambassadors for safety in the workplace."
