SUMMERSIDE – Summerside-based Soul Filter is set to release their debut album this month.

Soul Filter’s debut album, ‘A Minor Conspiracy’ will be released Dec. 14.
Soul Filter’s debut album, ‘A Minor Conspiracy’ will be released Dec. 14.

The alt rock-pop band consists of Karen and Mike Penton. The husband and wife duo has been performing for the past 15 years in popular coverbands; most recently in Pretty Tragic, and Karen & Mike Acoustic duo.

It was early fall of 2003 when the two first hit the stage together in their debut coverband Junkmale. They have played often at The Heritage, the Kensington Club, the Legion, the Silver Fox, St. James's Gate, Brother's 2 or OpenEats.

Now known as Soul Filter, the two have set forth in a new direction, focusing mainly on original music. This past summer the band released two singles "Armor" and "Like Water" which were both accompanied by videos.

The band is set to release its debut album ‘A Minor Conspiracy,’ Dec. 14.

Produced by Danny MacNevin and Soul Filter, recorded at BigDogz Recording Studio and Penton Productions, ‘A Minor Conspiracy’ infuses pop, blues and folk into a rock roots sound. Acoustic rhythm is the backbone for most of these songs; mixing in melodic electric guitar riffs and smooth bass lines. Vocals weave in between soft falsettos and full on power vocals. Their style is influenced by a mix of artists such as Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, The Cranberries, Holly McNarland and Sass Jordan; baring a unique yet reminiscent feel of the 90’s female rock-pop era.

The 10-song album is a collection of songs about love, loss, heartbreak, and just navigating life.  “It’s about picking up the pieces of the past and living whole in the present,” the band said in a release.

‘A Minor Conspiracy’ will be available on CD, and can be purchased from the group’s website www.soul-filter.com or directly from band members. It will also be available at Back Alley Music in Charlottetown and 902 Vapes in Summeside.

They also have live performances tonight, Dec. 8, with Little Cities at Evermoore Brewery in Summerside, and Dec. 14 with Brad Milligan Band at Hunter's Ale House in Charlottetown.
