I’ve always believed that the cornerstones of childhood memories are the things that families repeat over and over again. That’s why I’ve always tried to create traditions and family rituals in my home whenever I get the opportunity.

The last day of school has always marked an important milestone for my three boys, and I’m determined to celebrate it this year (despite COVID-19 restrictions). Things are going to look a little different this year, but with a few modifications, I think we can keep our annual last day of school traditions alive.

Bringing special treats to share with classmates on the last day of school has been an annual occurrence for my boys, but at this point, their classmates (aka their brothers) live under the same roof. So, I think it might be fun to put together some goodies and share them with our neighbourhood friends instead. Cookies with “Have a SWEET summer!” tags would be cute. I also love the idea of delivering Freezies with “Isn’t it COOL that school is over? Happy last day of school!” tags.

My favourite last day of school tradition is our “last day of school” finish line. I make a big paper banner, and when my boys get home from school, they run through it. This year, I am going to make a “homeschool finish line” banner. It’s a good way to reflect that, although we are celebrating in the same way, the world is a bit different right now.

Another wonderful last day of school tradition is going out for ice cream. What says, “bring on summer” better than a cool treat? We usually enjoy our treats in a Dairy Queen restaurant, but this year, take out will be a safer alternative.

It may not be the way the school year usually ends, but there's no reason kids and parent's can't celebrate the year with some fun activities at home.

Last year, I added a new tradition to our last day of school festivities, and I plan on doing it again this year. I set up a last day of school treasure hunt. I made a sign that said,

“Congratulations! You survived another school year. School makes you clever, and clever kids know how to solve riddles, right? Attached, you will find an envelope containing your first clue. Follow the clues and have fun. At the end of your journey, you’ll find a treasure. Ready, set… GO!”

How fun is it to get the kids active and running around solving clues? At the end of the adventure they get a sense of accomplishment and a prize!

There are many great ways to make kids feel special on the last day of school, but don’t forget your favourite teachers. There won’t be any final field trips, last day hugs, or heartfelt good-byes, but you can still thank your child’s teacher for all his/her hard work. Kids can write a thank you note and/or send an e-gift card. I’m sure a gift card for a bookstore or eating establishment would be very much appreciated.

End of year celebrations are sure to be different this year, but with a little effort they can still be fun and memorable. Enjoy your last day of school and first day of summer vacation!
