Time travel in pandemic times

On a misty, drizzly Saturday afternoon, a long-nosed group strolled down Church Street in St. John's, N.L.

Andrew Waterman brings us these photos and stories from the “March of the Plague Doctors."

“In August, I was researching the origins of the plague doctor costume which was invented in the 1600s as an early form of personal protective equipment,” says Ainsley Hawthorn, a Newfoundland cultural historian and author, who organized the happening.

Beyond PPE, the costumes became popular for carnival appearances, she adds.

“I’m hoping that people will be surprised, delighted, a little spooked — it is the spooky season — so that would be fine as well,” Hawthorn tells Waterman. “But I hope we give people a memorable experience if they see us walking down the street.”

Meet the plague doctors.

On the fly

For the second time in his working life, Cameron Ross is facing the prospect of his career path abruptly veering in a new direction.

The P.E.I. paramedic-turned-fishing-guide is navigating a year where tourists are far more scarce than the fish.

Ross shares stories from his time as a guide, helping small children to adult American visitors learn to cast.

"We trekked up and downstream a few times to try our luck, and once the sun set we waded out of the river, trudged back through the woods and returned to our vehicles. It was there in the dim light protruding from Ross' SUV he delved a bit more into what fly fishing is for him," The Guardian's Daniel Brown writes.
