A Nova Scotian artist has won a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts.

The Canada Council for the Arts announced the seven winners on Wednesday morning and Michael Fernandes, a visual artist from East Dover was on the list.

“Always employing incisive humour and serious play, Michael’s work has consistently challenged viewers, critics, peers and students,” Craig Leonard, an associate professor at NSCAD, said in a release. He nominated Fernandes for the award.

The winners receive a $25,000 prize and a bronze medallion which will be presented at a ceremony in Edmonton on July 3. Their work will be displayed at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton this summer.
