We are living in such extraordinary times, but Canadians are a hearty lot, and we do soldier on, hand sanitizer and mask firmly in place. And many of us rise to so many challenges with such grace, always putting others ahead of themselves for the better cause. Like the following food companies:

PIZZA NOVA: recently raised 120,000 for Variety – the Children’s Charity of Ontario, and presented a cheque to the organization a few days ago at an official ceremony.

“When we had to cancel our Pizza Nova That’s Amore Pizza for Kids, we were determined to try to find another way to help the kids”, said Domenic Primucci, president of Pizza Nova in a media release.  “We reached out to some of our valued suppliers, and together we were able to generate $120,000 for the Variety community. I’m grateful to our partners because these kids need our help and without their generosity, we wouldn’t be here today.”

“This would have been our 21st annual That’s Amore Kids Day and we rely on these funds to support the Variety families,” said Karen Stintz, president and CEO of Variety the Children’s Charity Ontario, in a media release. “When he mentioned that he still wanted to do a little something, we did not anticipate this. This … is not a little something. This is a lot of something so thank you as this will go a long way to help our families.”

SMILE WITH TIM HORTONS : Smiles all around for this amazing news from Tim Hortons, where the company’s famous national Smile Cookie Campaign reached a new record of close to $11 million dollars with 100% of the proceeds of the delicious cookies destined to a variety of charities across the land. Tim Hortons restaurant owners “wanted to reach new heights with Smile Cookie this year,” and their efforts paid off.

“We were absolutely blown away by the generosity of Canadians for our annual Smile Cookie campaign,” says Tim Hortons chief marketing officer Hope Bagozzi, in a media release. “We were able to surpass the amount of donations raised in 2019 by roughly $760,000, which really is astounding.”

One restaurant in Dunnville, Ont., sold an incredible 60,000-plus Smile Cookies – not bad when you consider there are only 6,000 residents in Dunnville! It was the third year in a row the Dunnville restaurant sold the most Smile cookies in the entire country -with proceeds are being donated to the Dunnville Hospital and Healthcare Foundation.

TED READER SAYS HE’LL SMOKE TO THAT!
As in firing up his favourite smoker to create some of the most astonishingly delicious foods around at his latest venture – a restaurant. Yes, this barbecue master, celebrity chef, author and food entertainer is now in the restaurant biz, with the recent opening of the Ted Reader Barbeque The Joint in the Eldorado Golf Club in Whitby – which he also opened in the midst of a pandemic.

It’s obvious nothing stops this chef from putting on a spread, and Reader is now creating his delicious mouth-watering foods on a golf course in Whitby, where the menu is full of Reader classics: Bone Dust fries, Junkyard Slaw, Brisket Baked Beans – and that’s just for starters. There’s his famous charcoal-grilled burgers, smoked St. Louis-style pork ribs, wild cherry smoked brisket, applewood smoked wings and so much more, including Thanksgiving offerings. And yes, there’s salad and veggies, too.

“Everything is cooked over a live fire, and we cook on hardwood and charcoal- no gas grill,” said Reader during a recent interview about his newest venture. “I didn’t know what to expect when we originally opened, but it was crazy busy! And we’re having fun, always changing the menu, tweaking things and having a great time of it.” Reader has one of his students, Ezio Dieana, as his pitmaster “and he creates some wicked awesome barbecue.”

So if you’ve a hankering for good grill, plus have a round of golf in mind – check it out! All details, including menu, is online, and eatery is open Wednesdays to Saturdays.
