It looks like 2020 will officially be known as the ‘Summer of the Staycation’. But just because you can’t jet off to Cuba or New York doesn’t mean you can’t have the trip of a lifetime this year. With travel restrictions still in place, this summer is the perfect time for Nova Scotians to explore the beauty of their own backyard.

The River Nest Wilderness Cabins are nestled on a peaceful piece of waterfront property along the gorgeous Murray River. We had the pleasure of checking out this glamping experience a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve been counting down the days until our next stay ever since.

After running North River Kayak Tours for more than 20 years, owner Angelo Spinazzola set out to create a unique camping experience unlike anything else; and after just five minutes in the River Nest village it’s clear he has accomplished just that.

Each of the five cabins are handcrafted and decorated with one-of-a-kind art pieces from Angelo’s travels as well as artisans across the Island. Open the door to any of the cabins and you’ll be met with the smell of fresh wood and seasonal flowers, immediately lulling you into a state of relaxation and peacefulness. Being tucked into the trees with a view of the river just outside your porch is a dream come true for those needing an escape from the busy world around us. I woke up early enough to spend the morning reading outside and watching the chipmunks play in front of my chair. A hummingbird even stopped just a foot from my nose!

But it’s not just the cabins or location that draw visitors to River Nest, it’s Angelo himself. As he puts it, “people like to put a face to the place.” And it’s clear that Angelo has poured his artistry and dedication into every aspect of the property, from the custom stained-glass windows and woodworking to the unique guitars in every cabin, each with its own story. What Angelo didn’t craft himself, he had made by Cape Breton artists, showing his passion for the Island and all it has to offer.

The village is also equipped with an outdoor pizza oven and open concept cook-out area perfect for mingling with other staycationers before settling in next to the cozy campfire. What I loved most was that service and wi-fi are only available from one area of the property, preventing the temptation of missing even a moment of bliss to be stuck on a screen.

After spending a quiet night in the cabin, all we had to do was roll out of bed to be off on our next adventure. We joined Angelo along with Ontario couple Graham and Sirenna for a morning of kayaking. Graham and Sirenna will be taking over North River Kayak Tours next summer, and their enthusiasm and excitement for the outdoors is contagious to say the least.

As we paddled through the calm water, spotting eagles and geese, I couldn’t help but reflect on how lucky we are to live on such a beautiful Island. So, don’t take it for granted this summer, get out and explore. When you see things through the eyes of a tourist, you’re reminded of how incredible Nova Scotia really is.
