Paddling along the historic Shubie Canal is a wonderful way to take in the beauty of autumn's colourful foliage. For centuries, the Mi'kmaq travelled these verdant waterways in handmade birch bark canoes.

Wildwood Water Sports in Shubie Park is a family-run business that rents out canoes, kayaks and paddle boards for $20 an hour every weekend until the end of October. They even provide paddles and life jackets. It's the perfect fall adventure for everyone, and you don't need to be a pro to paddle the calm Shubie Canal.

Once you are out on the water immersed in nature, under a canopy of trees, it's hard to imagine that you are only minutes from the city. It's truly a wilderness oasis.

The terrain is dense, almost jungle-like, as you glide down the waterway past lush ferns, and a little waterfall. Wildlife along the canal is quite active. Squirrels chatter loudly along the banks, and ducks love hanging out, skimming along the water at full speed. You may even get lucky and spot a beaver swimming by.

As you paddle further along the canal, you will reach the start of lovely Lake Charles. This relatively small lake feeds into the Halifax Harbour and makes for a great photo opportunity with the vibrant fall hues as the backdrop.
