P.E.I. Winter Woodlot Tour Feb. 22 in North Wiltshire

NORTH WILTSHIRE, P.E.I. — Islanders are invited to take part in a family-friendly winter event aimed at celebrating P.E.I. wildlife, forest ecosystems and sustainable woodlot use.

Watershed organizations from the Hunter-Clyde, Wheatley and West Rivers, along with the P.E.I. Department of Environment, Water and Climate Change, would like to invite the public to attend the seventh annual Winter Woodlot Tour on Saturday, Feb. 22.

This event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bluefield High School, 924 Colville Rd., North Wiltshire. There is no charge to attend, however, donations will be gratefully accepted to help offset expenses and ensure this popular event will continue in the future.

Bluefield High School is located just inside the West River Watershed boundary and provides a snapshot of the diversity of Island resources from farming to forestry and recreational activities.

This hilly area has a rich natural history encompassing fields and forests, streams and rivers, diverse wildlife habitats and multi-use recreational trails.

Fun and family-friendly activities include, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, obstacle course from Scouts Canada, making maple syrup and more.

Information stations along the wooded trails will feature winter wildlife, plants and trees of the Acadian Forest, private woodlot management, watershed management and stream restoration, forest-based products and woodworking.

This annual event is intended to give everyone an opportunity to explore the diverse resources and benefits that public and private forests provide to the Island environment.

A heated tent will be provided with many exhibits and, as always, free hot cider.
