It’s a place she doesn’t belong.
That’s how Lora, the unlikely heroine from Laughing Cat Productions’s “Caged” introduces herself and her situation.
Fringe veteran and award-winning actor Emily Schooley has written and will star as Lora in this brave one-woman play that tells the story of an incarcerated woman in solitary confinement.
Based on true events, “Caged” delves into weighty topics like murder, domestic violence, judicial abuse of power and even animal neglect.
It doesn’t shy away from these experiences or make light of them. It’s said it doesn’t pull any punches.
Instead, the play provides a candid, first-person point of view as to how easily anyone’s life can veer wildly off-course. It’s a story that “women especially will be able to relate to, but to which will have an impact on all audiences.
As Lora shares her history and the circumstances that have led to her incarceration, she shares experiences of everyday kindnesses and cruelties and how circumstances shape who we become.
Going far beyond innocence and guilt, the story she unravels is a hapless history, one laced with violence, betrayal, heartbreak and regret.
Playing Aug. 2 to 5 at the Charlottetown Yoga Space (49 Pownal Street, Charlottetown) “Caged” aims to create an eye-opening dialogue about women’s experiences in the post #MeToo era.
