The provincial Women’s Institute recently awarded two scholarships.

The PEIWI Education Scholarship for 2019 went to Zoe Good from Charlottetown, who is enrolled at the University of Prince Edward Island.

The Louise MacMillan Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Robert Larsen from Borden-Carleton, a student at Dalhousie University. The board extends best wishes to both winners and all applicants in their continued studies.

The P.E.I. Women’s Institute reminds all students there are several scholarships offered throughout the year. The next opportunity is the Helen Herring Scholarship for students entering their third year of university. The deadline is Sept. 30, and details are available at www.peiwi.ca.

Old Home Week is Aug. 8-17, and Islanders are invited to submit entries to WI's Handcraft, Horticulture and Art Show. Various classes in art, crafts, food, flowers, photography and vegetables can be entered and items will be on display during the provincial exhibition. The deadline to register is July 19. Additional details are at www.peiwi.ca

The P.E.I. Women's Institute is pleased to once again offer demonstrations twice daily during Old Home Week on origami, henna, foam crafts, hair braiding, recycling cards, paint demonstration, iris folding, rock medallions, glass etching, basket weaving and applique.

In addition, the PEIWI is organizing two free workshops.

“How to make corners in quilting” will take place Aug. 9, 1:30-3:30 p.m. The second session, “Let’s colour the world”, will be on Aug. 10, 1:30-3:30 p.m., and features painting agriculture themes. To register, contact the PEIWI office by calling 902-368-4860 or emailing [email protected] by July 19.

Volunteers are still needed for this year’s Handcraft, Horticulture and Art Show at Old Home Week. Anyone interested, including students, are invited to participate during scheduled times. Students needing volunteer hours are encouraged to sign-up. Contact Anna Cooper at 902-370-1818.

In branch summer events, the Wood Islands WI is hosting a Communication Photo Identification Event.  In this unique event, community members may be able to assist in identifying those missing names in family photos. This event encourages community members to share family stories and hear those of others. It takes place on Aug. 1, 1-4 p.m., at the Wood Islands Schoolhouse/WI Hall, Trans-Canada Highway in Wood Islands.

Watch for details in the coming months on PEWI’s cooking school taking place this fall.
