SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Whether it's assisting in an emergency or natural disaster, providing housing and shelter, or social services, the Salvation Army is there to help.

Anna MacDonald, manager of the Salvation Army Thrift Store located at 79 All-Weather Highway in Summerside, said every item donated or purchased goes back into the community.

"We had someone come to our store with no shoes, straight from the hospital, and we immediately assisted this person with all the essentials. There have been people that have come out of jail and had no place to stay, homeless on a freezing night, and we provided them with a room."

To get Islanders back on their feet in times of crisis, the Salvation Army Thrift Store relies on the generosity of the public in purchasing their store goods.

"Our store provides 65 percent of the funds required for the Salvation Army programs."

The Salvation Army offers programs and services that range from community family services, community churches, and shelter services.

"Our store just helped a lady that lost everything in a fire," said MacDonald.

"If an emergency or natural disaster should strike, you can visit our Salvation Army Family Services, and they will determine your need. Our store will then get a requisition (Store Goods Request), and items on the list and in our store are provided free."

The Salvation Army feeds an average of 40 to 50 people every day in Summerside, from Monday to Friday, said MacDonald.

"We fill an average of 320 to 400 food hampers every month, each of these hampers ranges in cost from $75 to $100 each, with the value of what's packed from vegetables, pasta, meats, to last a family three days. If we run out of food, then we purchase items, so our store provides these funds to feed families."

MacDonald said there is no money pocketed at the end of the day.

"Recently, we've had several people ask us where the funds go. Our store is a non-profit. Funds go to assist those in times of crisis and everyday needs. We have long-term staff employed at the store, so we also help create jobs and put money back into the community."

She added, "The Salvation Army gives so much, and many are unaware of these essential services and programs offered that have changed countless peoples' lives in this community."

Every day, the store has sales, with coloured tags on items to showcase the discount.

"We welcome people from all walks of life because there are items for everyone, and there is no discrimination. Every item donated or purchased helps someone in need," MacDonald said.
