Variety show at Katherine Hughes Memorial Hall at the BIS

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The variety show on Saturday, Nov. 23, in the Katherine Hughes Memorial Hall in the Irish Cultural Centre at 582 North River Rd. will feature two instructors and five students from Holland College School of Performing Arts.

There will be a 50/50 draw during the evening at the hall and a light lunch is served during the intermission. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The show will runs 7:30-10 p.m., and admission is at the door. Everyone is welcome. For more information, call 902-213-3924. 

The BIS is again partnering with Holland College School of Performing Arts with five students from the college performing in the show.  Students in the music performance program at Holland College’s School of Performing Arts study Celtic music as part of their curriculum. They learn about the history of the Celtic musical tradition in the classroom and they prepare and perform pieces in their Celtic ensembles. 

"Consisting of both Holland College instructors and students, Celtic Storm’s blend of sounds and instrumentation combine seamlessly to create a whole new genre of music," says a release about the show.

"Their performance promises to take you on a musical adventure around the globe, as these performers test the limitations of, and in the process, transform Celtic music."

This fresh band of young musicians fuse worldwide genres of cultural music. Its members boast skill sets and talents from Manitoba, British Colombia, P.E.I., Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Ireland, Ecuador, Venezuela and India. The show will feature students and instructors, including Gormlaith Maynes on concertina, Philippe Leblanc, flute, Sid Acharya, piano, Tom Gammons, guitar, Thomas Pompei, percussion, Tre Sutherland, fiddle, and Patrick Tinant, fiddle.

The variety show is the last for 2019. On May 15 the BIS will begin its 24-week ceilidh season once again.
