CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The P.E.I. Symphony Orchestra’s season resumes it’s series of concerts on March 1.
The concert, titled True North, is the third in a series of four Canada-themed performances. It’ll take place in the sanctuary of Zion Presbyterian Church in Charlottetown, starting at 2:30 p.m.
Quebec-born conductor Mélanie Léonard will lead the orchestra through a selection of works by Canadian composers. Léonard is the music director of the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra and has previously held conducter positions with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
“It is an immense honour to make today’s music alive through sharing it with an audience,” she said. “In performing Canadian repertoire, we uphold our traditions and create new ones."
Also performing is Darin MacBeth, a french horn soloist, in place of the award-winning Justin Amador who had to step down following a recent injury.
Tickets are $40 for adults and $15 for students. They can be purchased in advance at the Confederation Centre of the Arts or at the church entrance on the afternoon of the concert.
Before the concert, there will be a free pre-concert talk in Zion’s youth chapel at 1:30 p.m. Léonard and MacBeth will discuss the performance to follow and be available for questions.
The final concert of the series, Copland and Rachmaninoff, takes place at the Confederation Centre of the Arts on April 19. Visit www.peisymphony.com for more information.

- Alice Ping Yee Ho’s Jubilation of Spring (2015)
- Mar Atlantico - a 2001 tone poem for orchestra by Peter Charles Allen.
- Additionally, MacBeth will be featured on Elizabeth Raum’s Sherwood Legend (1996).
