MURRAY HARBOUR, P.E.I. — For Natalie Edgar, the community's latest project has become one of its most fun and exciting efforts.
"It turned into a bigger project than we thought it was going to be," the project volunteer said.
This holiday season, residents of Murray Harbour came together to construct a Christmas tree out of lobster traps, partly to honour the region's fishermen. A tree lighting event is taking place on Dec. 4, which Edgar estimates may attract up to 200 people.
Leading up to the event, people were invited to hang buoys on the tree in memory of loved ones. Several of these have been dedicated to fishermen who died at sea. Community Coun. Gary MacKay, who helped with the tree's construction, said every day since it went up he has seen more and more buoys.
"It just kind of morphed into a memorial," MacKay said.
To account for a potentially large crowd, COVID-19 social distancing measures will be in effect and people are asked to wear masks. As well, there will be traffic flaggers to help keep motorists and pedestrians safe on the road.
"We're requesting as much as possible that people stay in their cars," Edgar said. "We're trying to keep it as COVID-friendly as possible."
There will be hot chocolate and candy canes available at a table on the north side of the wharf, and the Murray Harbour Fire Department is rumoured to be bringing Santa Claus along to the event. As well, "O Christmas Tree" will be sung by carollers after the lighting.
WHEN AND WHERE:
Murray Harbour's Christmas tree lighting starts at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4.
The tree is located along the harbour just off Main Street. Those attending can find parking on the south side of the harbour or at the old church hall's parking lot nearby.
General parking will not be available on the north side of the wharf.
