CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The 2020 Fall Lecture Series of the Benevolent Irish Society will host a lecture by John Flood on Friday, Nov. 27, 7:30 p.m., titled Celebrating Katherine Hughes: The Road to Recognition.
Hughes (1876-1925), whose national vision was a monumental force in shaping the Canada and Ireland of today, is an unsung historical figure, for the most part, in both countries. This talk will highlight some of her notable achievements as described in Pádraig Ó Siadhail’s 2014 award-winning biography, Katherine Hughes: A Life and a Journey. The presentation will also serve as the platform for unveiling plans by the BIS to honour her with a permanent commemoration.
The hall is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible. There will be a light snack served after the lecture. Admission is by donation at the door, which opens at 6:30 p.m. The event takes place in the Katherine Hughes Memorial Hall at the Irish Cultural Centre at 582 North River Rd. Everyone is welcome.
