The family and friends of Sister Cecile Buote, a missionary sister who is formerly of Rustico, are once again inviting people to donate to a fundraiser organized to help the poor she ministers to in Kumbo, Cameroon, Africa.

For over 45 years, Buote has been helping families and young adults with their daily struggles as they prepare for the future. There is unrest in the region where she lives, and a strike that has been ongoing for five years has resulted in school and business closures that have left families destitute. Many families are unable to afford the necessities of life such food, education and medical care.

Buote says in a recent letter, “As I earlier wrote, schools have not reopened. It is so sad. Life is becoming more and more difficult. So many people come to beg, especially for food and health issues. These are people I know well and know that what they are telling me is really true. Rest assured that the fundraiser is truly a blessing from God”.

Because of contributions from Islanders and the support they have shown, she has been able to help them.

That support is needed once again, but because of COVID-19 restrictions, fundraising will be different this year.

An online auction is being organized that will run from today to Nov. 27. As in the past, on Sunday, Dec. 6, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., donations from the general public can be received at the Rustico Bay Seniors Club at 2104 Church Rd., Rustico. In addition, the Buote Mission Fund account is at the Stella Maris Credit Union in North Rustico where anyone can make a contribution. For anyone mailing a donation, all cheques must to be made out to Buote Mission Fund and sent to 2129 Church Rd., box 5613, Hunter River, RR3, C0A 1N0. E-transfers will also be accepted at [email protected].
