To help you get the most out of your next project and ensure the job is done safely, follow these safety tips.
• Plan your electrical layout: During the planning phase, a lot of attention is usually focused on the layout of the home and its interior design. But planning for your electrical components is just as important. Work with a licensed electrical contractor, who can help you determine the best locations for outlets, lighting for your space and other electrical requirements so you won’t have to make expensive changes after completion.
• Ensure your reno is legal: Whenever electrical work is being done on your home, the person performing the work must file a notification of work (permit). This is true whether you’re doing the job yourself or you are hiring a licensed electrical contractor. In addition, after electrical work is complete, it needs to be inspected.
• Channel DIY to non-electrical projects: Electricity is extremely dangerous, and it’s important to keep you and your family safe. Plus, nothing runs through a budget quicker than having to re-do work that does not meet code or is unsafe, especially electrical. So, leave the electrical to the experts. Stay away from DIY electrical work, and use your creativity for finishing touches and decor instead.
