New homes starts in Canada trended downward in January from December, says the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC).
January’s trend was 210,915 homes compared to December’s 212,212 homes, both numbers expressed as annualized figures as a six-month, moving average of monthly seasonally adjusted annual rates of housing starts.
“The national trend in housing starts essentially held steady in January,” said Bob Dugan, CMHC’s chief economist. “Lower-trending starts in Vancouver were partly offset by stronger activity in Montréal, while the trend in Toronto was stable at the start of the year.”
In Calgary, the trend measure was 14,249 in January, up slightly from 14,187 in December.
