Single use coffee pods may be the bane of Mother Nature’s existence. Coffee companies are scrambling to figure out what to do with these tiny capsules of land fillers and many are getting creative – including Nespresso, which recently announced a partnership with the Swedish lifestyle bike brand Velosophy to repurpose the capsule into something sleek and unique: A limited-edition bike made from the recycled aluminum coffee capsules – 300 per bike, to be exact.
Called the RE:CYCLE, the partnership reflects a balance of sustainability and style designed to illustrate the potential of recyclable aluminum, considered one of the world’s most valuable resources that can be re-melted and reused infinitely.
And here’s the exciting part: For every bike they sell, another is given to a schoolgirl in Africa through World Bicycle Relief to improve her access to education.
“We created Velosophy with a clear purpose: To have a positive impact on the world,” says Jimmy Ostholm, CEO and company founder. “This purpose drives everything we do … the bike is beautifully designed, responsibly sourced and sustainably produced.”
Adds Jean-Marc Duvoisin, CEO of Nespresso: “We have been inspired by working with Velosophy, and I hope the RE:CYCLE bicycle inspires people to recycle.”
Nespresso opened its first recycling program in Switzerland in 1991 – today, the program is available in more than 53 countries.
