REGISTRATION AND TROUBLE SHOOTING
Q. Why does the Journal Pioneer have a metered website?
The Journal Pioneer website has a metered membership model on it meaning you need to have a membership to access our content on an unlimited basis. We’re by no means alone in this practice. Our peers, like The New York Times, Washington Post and Globe and Mail all ensure they can produce top-quality journalism by offering membership-based products.
Q: Why are my articles counted in some areas and not counted in others?
Our metered membership model offers two kinds of content: free content and premium content.
Free content is available to both members and non-members to enjoy at any time across our website as well as SaltWire.com, and is not counted towards your premium content allotment. Our members enjoy unlimited access to our premium content, while non-members can still engage with our in-depth journalism, just with limited access. We do this for a few reasons: to allow all readers to access the stories that are important to them, and to provide our valued members with unlimited access to content.
By purchasing a SaltWire Network Unlimited Digital Access membership, you allow us to invest even more deeply in our journalism, re-inventing, re-invigorating and re-thinking the kind of content you want and need in order to be engaged and informed citizens.
Q: How can I tell the difference between a free and premium article?
Premium articles are marked on our website with the following symbol (shown below). Free articles will not have this symbol on them. You can find this symbol on the homepage, section pages, within our trending stories widgets as well as underneath the headline on an article page:
Q: Do you offer any free content to readers?
Yes. We will continue to offer stories that are available to all readers across the many sections available online. Content denoted with our premium symbol (shown below) will be available to our non-members on a limited basis for you to enjoy:
Q: Does free mean the content is less valuable?
No! Content that is not marked premium is not indicative of quality. Instead, the content that is not metered is free because it’s a matter of public safety, or a widely available news story. We understand our audience consumes many different types of news, so we will not count content that is widely available or a matter of public safety toward your premium content allotment.
Q: What is a digital membership and why would I want it?
A SaltWire Network Unlimited Digital Access membership provides unlimited access to all of the Journal Pioneer and SaltWire.com's premium content on desktop and mobile device browsers including access to our daily e-edition kiosk, including digital replicas of The Chronicle Herald, Cape Breton Post, The Guardian and The Telegram. This model allows the Journal Pioneer to deliver even more premium, local journalism across multiple devices. Islanders have placed their trust in us to help inform, inspire, engage and entertain every day. As a member, you’re joining a community of people who believe that local journalism is an important part of a healthy, thriving community and democracy.

SALTWIRE NETWORK AND SALTWIRE.COM
Q: What is the SaltWire Network?
The SaltWire Network is the home for hundreds of journalists and 5 media titles across the East Coast, including Journal Pioneer, The Guardian, The Chronicle Herald, Cape Breton Post and The Telegram.
Q: What publications are included in the SaltWire Network?
Journal Pioneer, The Guardian, Cape Breton Post, The Chronicle Herald and The Telegram.
Q: What is SaltWire.com?
SaltWire.com is the next evolution of our deeply-rooted company. It is the new home for the news, opinions and stories shaping our communities and Canada's East Coast. It’s where all of the content from across our Network can be found on one simple, easy-to-navigate website. You can navigate that content by location preference, choosing your location to see local content from your area, or by exploring what's trending in the Atlantic region, Canada and around the world.
For example, if you live in Halifax but are from St. John's, SaltWire.com allows you to seamlessly toggle between locations to see hyper-local content from each community. Alternatively, you can also take a regional approach and get a collection of the top stories or in-depth features from across Atlantic Canada.
Ultimately, SaltWire.com is about connecting more people to the local stories that matter to them.
Q: As a member of one of your publications, do I have access to SaltWire.com?
Yes! As a member of one of our publications you also receive unlimited access to SaltWire.com and all of the SaltWire Network’s publication websites. You can use the same credentials you would use to log into your existing publication website to log into SaltWire.com or any other SaltWire publication website.
Q: Do you offer digital memberships to SaltWire.com?
Yes! Click here to see our current membership offers for SaltWire.com.
Q: Why did you create another website/news source?
SaltWire.com is about adding value to your membership. We know lots of members are interested in content from across Atlantic Canada and routinely visit multiple sites every day. We wanted to make it easier for those who want more content to get it. With SaltWire.com, you can get content from the Burin Peninsula to the Annapolis Valley and Charlottetown all in one convenient location, but you also get access to thought-provoking writers from across Atlantic Canada that you might not otherwise discover.
Q: How is SaltWire.com different from your other publication sites?
Premium content from all sites. Rather than jump from site-to-site to get your news, you can now find all of your local, regional, national and international news in one place.
A location-based feature that identifies where you are and serves local content that aligns with that. It allows you to switch your view between local regions or dig into Atlantic-wide content for more regional coverage. This feature works for all sections including weather, obituaries and opinions.
A new member-only commenting feature allows you to participate in the conversation in a more meaningful way. Comments are enabled on all stories for logged in members only. This feature will enable members to go deeper on an issue, identify new or unique perspectives, or pose a question for future coverage.
Single sign-on. Rather than go from site-to-site, SaltWire.com has a single sign-on, which means your login information for the Journal Pioneer or The Guardian will work for SaltWire.com.
This means that your membership gets you more content than ever; if you have a subscription to a SaltWire publication today you now have access to exclusive content available on SaltWire.com. We hope that you will check it out, give us your feedback and tune in for the next version in 2020!
Q: Will SaltWire.com have its own content or only content from the Network?
There will be some SaltWire.com-only content, which you will have access to if you have a membership with any of the SaltWire Network publications. For example, if you are a subscriber with the Journal Pioneer or The Guardian today, you will also now get access to all premium content available on SaltWire.com.
Q: How do I switch/toggle between locations to see content from other communities?
Use the location-picker in the top left-hand corner to identify your area. You will be served local-to-you content for all the topics you love including weather, obituaries and opinions. Switch your view to other communities or explore our regional content from across the East Coast.
