SUMMERSIDE – Each spring the Summerside Legion presents awards to students in three categories, which include three levels of education.

First, the Veterans Memorial Perpetual Bursary is awarded to students attending a post-secondary institution. The student must have completed one year at university or college. The bursary is presented based on need and transcript of student grades.

The second category involves the annual scholarships awarded to four students graduating from Three Oaks Senior High School. The scholarships of $500 each are awarded based on grades.

To apply for the bursary there must have been some affiliation in the past with George R. Pearkes V.C. Branch No. 5 of the Royal Canadian Legion. Dependents or lineal descendants of life, ordinary and/or voting associate members can apply.

The third award is open to any student in Grade 9 attending Athena or Summerside Intermediate School who submits a 200-word essay on what a veteran means to them or on Remembrance Day. Five $100 awards will be given out to the junior high graduates.

Applications for all awards, bursaries and scholarships as well as transcripts of marks, if required, must be received at George R. Pearkes V.C. Branch 5 Legion by May 31.
