SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. - Anyone can be in a difficult financial situation at Christmas, so to take away the stress and make it a joyous time for, all the Salvation Army in Summerside is asking families to register for their Christmas hamper and toy program.

Families are asked to register on the following dates: today and Oct 25, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Nov. 6 and Nov. 8, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Nov. 27 and Dec. 4, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“I was one of nine children and the oldest. We were very poor,” says volunteer Reta Owens.

“My mother was a single mom, and we had nothing. If it were not for the community and the Salvation Army we would not have had a Christmas or even a dinner. Now as a mature adult it’s my time to give back.”

Each member of the family is asked to provide picture identification, which can include a driver’s license, health or volunteer card. Proof of address, a phone number and household income will also be required.

The Salvation Army is located at 374 Pope Rd., Summerside.
