The QEH Auxiliary has made the final installment of its $520,000 pledge from 2014.
Five years ago, the auxiliary pledged $520,000 during the QEH/Eastlink annual telethon. The majority of those funds were directed to the Supply, Processing and Distribution (SPD) Department of the QEH.
The staff members of SPD work behind the scenes to create a steady flow of supplies from the hospital distribution centre to patients and personnel throughout the QEH.
“With the initial funds, we purchased a large-capacity washer-disinfector and an instrument washer-disinfector,” says Susan MacKinnon, QEH SPD manager. “With this final pledge payment, our new electronic instrument tracking system, at a cost of $275,000, will be operational in the coming months.”
Hundreds of trays, each containing the instruments required for various procedures taking place throughout the hospital, will be permanently marked using barcoding identification technology.
This will allow for visibility and traceability throughout the hospital and provide immediate access to detailed information on the history and use of the trays.
“The implementation of the electronic instrument tracking system is defined by the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) as part of the complete patient safety record and the QEH will be one of a few hospitals in the country to have this equipment.”
QEH Auxiliary fast facts
