SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. —

For 74 years, the P.E.I. Rural Beautification Society has been improving the rural landscape of Prince Edward Island by encouraging Islanders to be good stewards of their properties.

The society has recently launched the 2019 Competition Book and is now in the process of distributing the books in many areas of rural P.E.I.

“Our Society is full of excitement this time of year,” said society president Garth Davey.

“We’ve seen lots of interest in the great work completed by the board members of the society and we expect this to be another successful year with even more entries.”
Judges will visit the properties of all the entries and select the overall winners. Awards will be presented at the annual awards dinner, to be held on Oct. 29. This year, 19 competitions are included in the 2019 edition of the annual competition book. Prizes are offered in all three counties with the overall winners capturing the provincial prizes.

A total of $15,000 in prize money will be awarded in the following categories: Farm Home Improvement; Dairy Farm, Home Improvement; New Home Completion; Community Building Improvement; Commercial Building Improvement; Community Improvement; Community Flower Garden; Commemorative Garden; Tourist Accommodation; Potato Warehouse; Rural Cemetery; Home Owner’s Flower and Vegetable Gardens; Window Boxes/Container Gardens; Mail Box/Home Identification; Commercial Flower Gardens and Reuse-Recycle-Repurpose.

For the young gardener, the society is offering a youth garden competition. This is open to all youth, 16 years of age and younger.

“We are expecting lots of entries in this competition,” said Davey. “The entry can be a flower or vegetable garden, and they may receive assistance from an adult gardener. This is a perfect project for a child and their grandparents.”

Competition books are now available at all Island Access P.E.I. locations, Veseys Seeds, the P.E.I. Women’s Institute office in Charlottetown, the Belvedere Funeral Home, the P.E.I. Potato Board, TIAPEI, Island Waste Management Corporation, ADL-Summerside and the Dairy Farmers of P.E.I. office in Charlottetown.

The entry deadline is June 15.
